Stage 2 Drama
SACE CREDITS: 20 credits
KEY CONTACT: Steve Kammermann
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND: Completion of Stage 1 Drama at a C grade or above
COURSE CONTENT:
Students will be involved in a broad range of performance, creative and evaluative tasks, in a variety of group sizes.
Students will work in either an on-stage or off-stage role to perform the Group Production of a chosen playscript, as directed by the teacher. This is a public performance and involves daytime and evening performances alongside extensive outside of school hours rehearsals. After the production, students present an evaluation of their contribution to the performance and theatrical decisions.
During the year students view live theatre performances to demonstrate their critical analysis skills. Combined with studies of significant playwrights and play texts, students evaluate and analyse live theatrical productions and create their own visions for hypothetical productions. A combination of these tasks forms the Evaluation and Creativity assessment type.
The Creative Presentation, assessed externally by SACE, involves a class study of a theatre practitioner from which students form groups of 2-5 and take on both on-stage and off-stage roles to devise their own unique performance of 10-25 minutes as a response to the text, independent of teacher direction. This process requires extensive outside of school hours rehearsal. After a public performance, students provide a justification and evaluation of their theatrical choices and process in a Learning Portfolio.
Significant rehearsals are required to be successful in Stage 2 Drama, therefore students need to commit to after-school, lunchtime and holiday rehearsals totaling 20-30 hours. Throughout the course, students work with external theatre practitioners to deepen their dramatic thinking.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 2 Drama performance standards. They will provide evidence of their learning through three assessment types:
Assessment Types
- Group Production
- Evaluation and Creativity
- External – Creative Presentation
It is recommended that students independently attend several professional theatre performances in order to broaden their live theatre experience
